Statement
I believe in found beauty. I pursue the moment's grandeur through simplicity of design
and I wait for the moment of rest and concentration.
I photograph by intuition when I am gripped by feeling. I carefully hold intersecting lines and shapes in tension and those few people present in my landscapes are kept distant and unaware.
The story of my work is my life in the West.
I live on Puget Sound, the inland sea of the Pacific Northwest of North America.
We've been here for seven generations. My pictures testify to 45 years of observations and impressions.
My mother's family came to Washington State in 1856, along the Oregon Trail from Terre Haute Indiana. Before that, they came from Ireland, the west of Ireland, in the great diaspora, the flight from starvation.
My father's family came from Croatia in the late 1880's. My grandfather was seven when his dying father
declared "Martin, you're the head of the family now."
